A post-Festivus, pre-Christmas Day list of things to watch and listen to

Sports, schmorts.

Okay, let’s totally goof around a bit today since it’s a quiet day with nothing but gift shopping and some grocery shopping to do and with my love of crowds and The People, there’s a chance I’ll end up incarcerated at the end of the day and I’d like to think so of you will have a smile on your face.

(And I don’t know how this will work but if you want to match any of these, send ‘em along to askdoug@thestar.ca and I’ll figure out a way to make a file of ‘em and get them up here maybe tomorrow night from Milwaukee; it’s one way we can stay a wee bit in touch)

How I missed this yesterday is totally beyond me but we better start with it on this special day, no?

The Best Christmas Movies, Old Time

(Run this on a loop all afternoon and evening and I guarantee a good day)

Miracle on 34th Street

Of course there’s a Santa Claus, who else eats all those cookies we used to leave out every Christmas Eve? And those carrots didn’t get half eaten by themselves, that’s for sure.

White Christmas

Bing, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney? How could you go wrong with a cast like that. Put it in the middle of the movie marathon and sing along if you feel like it.

The 1950s version, with Alistair Sim and accept to substitutes. Not entirely uplifting from start to finish but the dark moments become brighter, right?

A Christmas Story

It was the absolute favourite of Super Brother and encroaches on the No. 1 spot for that very reason. And who didn’t want a beebee gun as a kid?

It’s A Wonderful Life

It’s simply the gold standard by which all others should be measured. Angels getting wings, old crazy Uncle Billy, lovable mixed up George Bailey? And I’ve seen the gym floor that opens over the pool and that’s cool.

And what’s Christmas without Elvis? Really.

Back to the flicks

The Best Christmas Movies, Untraditional

(My taste tends to run to the old stuff but these all work at some point over this time of year, right?)

Haven’t seen it in years but I remember it being very good, right?

Love Actually

Gotta have a chick flick, right?

Home Alone

Who among us has not at some time done the Macauley Culkin shocked face look?

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Again, the gold standard of this genre and always brought to my attention by The Mighty Quinn, a big fan of the Muppets.

This had to be on the list of carols, right?

Speaking of …

Silent Night

Hark, The Herald Angels Sing

O Come, All Ye Faithful

Joy To The World

Good King Wencelas

That’s a pretty good traditional song list, isn’t it?

But this? This is outstanding and a huge favourite and everyone has to love it, correct?

Okay, that’s about it for today, time to shop and run errands and get ready for a quiet evening before the road trip.

From the bottom of the heart, a very, very Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Have a great day.
