CALGARY — After 100 years, it might be a little hard to surprise a gal on her birthday, but Rene Desreux’s family found a way — she got her very own parade Saturday afternoon.
The Calgary Stampede Showband will perform roughly a dozen times at this year’s Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, but on Saturday afternoon they played for a very special audience.
Right there, on the street outside Desreux’s grandson’s home where her 100th birthday party was being held, the band piled out and put on a show.
“We heard about it through her grandson. He got connected with us through some friends, and when we heard about it we thought it would be a great thing to be at and help celebrate,” Calgary Stampede Showband director Aaron Park told the Sun.
“It was a total surprise to her.”
Delighted, and somewhat embarrassed by all the attention, the birthday girl was nonetheless thrilled at the gesture.
“It was quite the event, in the middle of all of the thunder, lightning and rain,” Desreux said. “And the band played right through it.”
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, also on hand for the celebration, said on Twitter the surprise performance was “amazing.”
