Barrie Police investigating drug-related house fire

Police are investigating a drug-related house fire that sent 11 people to hospitalfour of them with ‘critical injuries’ — in Barrie, Ont., on Friday evening.

Sgt. John Brooks tells the Canadian Press, it’s suspected hash was being made inside the garage.

Barrie Police will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m., outside the home.

Investigators say they are in the process of obtaining a search warrant and plan on executing it this afternoon.

The exact number of people in the house at 59 Collete Cres. when the fire broke out is not yet clear.

Neighbours said they heard explosions, or what sounded like loud bangs.

Deputy fire chief Jeff Weber said this was a challenging blaze to battle.

“They had very difficult conditions in the upstairs when they went to the second floor to do a primary search, and once they confirmed that they had all the people accounted for that were in the house, they retreated back outside to a defensive attack,” Weber said.

The fire was first reported not long after 9 p.m. ET.

The blaze, which was under control before midnight Friday, is under investigation by both Barrie Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal.
