Swimmers Tess Routliffe and Sarah Mehain added gold and silver, respectively, to Canada’s Parapan Am Games medal haul on Thursday, finishing 1-2 in the women’s 100-metre freestyle S7 event in Toronto.

Routliffe won gold in a Parapan Am record time of one minute 15.46 seconds, and Mehain finished 4.02 seconds back.

Mexico’s Jessica Hernandez was 9.78 seconds behind Routliffe to take the bronze, while Canada’s Nydia Langill finished fourth, 17.71 seconds back of the winner.

The New Zealand-born Routliffe, whose hometown is Caledon, Ont., and Mehain, from Vernon, B.C., also went 1-2 in their division’s 50m freestyle event earlier in the Games. Routliffe was the silver medallist in the 200m individual medley.

Canadian swimmers have racked up 53 medals in Toronto — 14 gold, 23 silver and 16 bronze. The total puts Canada two medals behind leader Brazil.
