Can’t find a parking spot at Yorkdale? Try their new app

For those shoppers eager to run their holiday errands but who just can’t seem to find a parking spot — Yorkdale has an app for that.

The north Toronto mall added 800 parking stalls with its $ 220 million expansion unveiled in November and says it is now the first shopping centre in the GTA to offer a free parking availability app.

The app for all major wireless platforms — including Microsoft’s Windows 8 — provides digital updates on the quarter hour on the best areas to find a space.

General manager Anthony Casalanguida said Yorkdale is the first shopping centre in Ontario to implement a stoplight parking system with lights over each stall in the new underground lot alerting drivers to parking availability.

All Yorkdale Shopping Centre parking entrances are equipped with computerized tabulators that reveal the number of unoccupied parking spots, with a live streaming video of upper deck parking and parking lot tabulators available at

Casalanguida said Yorkdale spent more than $ 2 million on the parking location technology as part of the expansion that added 145,000 sq. ft. of space, 27 new stores and a high-end food court.

The new-look mall is also home to new upscale stores that made their debut in Canada, including: Microsoft, Tesla Motors, Ted Baker London, Kate Spade, Ann Taylor and Loft.

Casalanguida called the parking app “an investment in goodwill,” and said part of the goal is to dispel any impression that parking is scarce at Yorkdale.

While malls including the Eaton Centre offer apps for iPhones and other devices that let users access the latest store promotions, Casalanguida said Yorkdale’s investment in parking location technology “ups the ante.”

The Yorkdale App first introduced for iOS and BlackBerry in 2010 also offers mall directions, updates on promotions in its more than 250 shops and services, along with movie ratings and times at the Yorkdale Cinemas and the ability to purchase tickets from a mobile device. – Living
