Condo Security: Keep your head up in the parking garage

Fotolia Stay alert in the parking garage to keep safe.

Condo-security expert Frank Fourchalk shares his tips weekly. “If you regularly walk through the underground parking areas of your building, you need to stay alert. Lose the cellphone, BlackBerry, iPod or anything else that interrupts your senses.

Predators often target those who are distracted from the danger that lurks. If a predator notices you have your head up scanning the garage 360 degrees and looking alert, he or she is not so likely to select you as their next victim. Always carry your vehicle alarm key fob with you and keep your thumb on the panic alarm until you get into your car and lock the doors. In the event of an emergency, sound your car alarm to distract the attacker.

“Remember it’s better to be safe than sorry, so don’t feel bad about sounding an alarm on an innocent person. After all, intuition can go both ways.”
