In 2014, director Richard Linklater impressed critics and audiences, racking up awards nominations and wins, with his epic coming-of-age drama Boyhood, widely considered to be the movie of the year.

Now, the American filmmaker returns to his roots with Everybody Wants Some!!, a comedy that follows baseball jocks as they navigate the college party scene.

The new movie stars a relatively unknown ensemble cast and is being billed as a ‘spiritual sequel’ to Linklater’s 1993 cult classic Dazed and Confused.

However, it’s really more like a “continuation of Boyhood,” says the director.

“It begins right where Boyhood ends — the guy shows up to college. Very different guy, different time, all that. But for me, in my own personal experience, it’s like the next film from Boyhood.”

Everybody Wants Some!! opens in Toronto on April 1, Montreal and Vancouver on April 8, and wide in theatres across Canada on April 15
