‘Firefly Online’ and other games based on sci-fi shows

A video in support of upcoming MMO Firefly Online has lead actor Nathan Fillion voicing cult character Mal Reynolds; we take the opportunity to look at other video games that have been based on sci-fi TV series good and bad.

Farscape: The Game, 2002 – Windows PC
Released one month before the series’ cancellation, and based on events that the TV serial had covered three years beforehand, Farscape: The Game won few new fans with this treatment, though it was roundly praised for recruiting original actors for its voice work. Co-leads Ben Browder and Claudia Black made it into Stargate SG-1 but two years too late to feature in that series’ own eventual video game adaptation; Black is now recognizable as Morrigan in the Dragon Age games and Chloe in Uncharted.

Battlestar Galactica Online, 2011 – Windows PC
A free to play browser-based MMO which sees the series’ Cyclon and Colonial factions scrabble for control of a new system that they’ve both been stranded in; players can, therefore, choose which side they want to fight with before jumping into their spaceship and exploring, exploiting natural resources, and attempting to exterminate other players’ ships.

Stargate SG-1: Unleashed, 2013 – iOS, Android
Only two out of three episodes were released for this multi-genre hybrid which mixed elements from contemporaries such as the conversation, player-choice championing The Walking Dead adventure game and action-adventure Mass Effect, though not to such great effect. Nonetheless, it’s a rare example of a Stargate tie-in that actually made it out of development and into public hands.

Defiance, 2013 – PlayStation 3, Windows PC, Xbox 360
A third-person shooter that plays like a cross between unlicensed successes Gears of War and Borderlands but offered as an MMO (free since mid-2014) with the scope for simple co-op missions or chaotic communal events. Released to coincide with the debut of its TV series parent, which is now heading into its third season.

Firefly Online is being developed for Windows PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
