From groceries to gas and now cars: Air Miles strikes a deal with GM
Faced with slipping sales, General Motors has turned to the popular Air Miles loyalty program to boost car sales, promising up to 3,000 points to customers buying higher-end models.
The partnership marks the first time Air Miles has offered points to customers for purchasing vehicles.
The deal will only be available during specific promotional periods and the number of Air Miles collected will depend on the specific vehicle purchased and the details of the promotion.
From now until Feb. 28, Air Miles collectors can earn up to 3,000 points when they buy or lease a 2013 Chevrolet, Buick GMC or Cadillac. Purchasing the Spark earns customers 750 Air Miles reward miles.
Air Miles members can redeem points for merchandise, gift cards and travel.
Short-haul flights are available for about 1,000 Air Miles, depending on the season and availability. It takes 240 Air Miles to purchase a $ 25 gift card for Banana Republic, iTunes or the Gap, which works out to about $ 312 for 3,000 points.
The Air Miles rewards program has more than 10 million active collector accounts, representing approximately two-thirds of all Canadian households, according to spokesperson Natasha Lasiuk.
