Leafs fans, and hockey fans in general, are excited to see this highly anticipated matchup between two of the top young players in the game. The two excelled together at the World Cup; now they face each other in the NHL for the first time. It’s also McDavid’s first visit to Toronto (injuries dashed that opportunity last season). McDavid was tied for the NHL lead in scoring through Sunday with 12 points in nine games. Matthews has 10 points, but is scoreless in his last three games.
Need to know: The Oilers lost 2-0 to Ottawa on Sunday to snap a five-game winning streak. Edmonton is 3-0 on the road so far, and entered Monday seventh in the NHL with 29 goals . . . Edmonton coach Todd McLellan says his club’s power play remains a work in progress: It has produced four goals in 27 opportunities . . . Goalie Cam Talbot is a big reason the Oilers are off to a strong start. Talbot has given up three goals in his last five games, shutting out Winnipeg and Vancouver . . . Ryan Nugent Hopkins has yet to score in nine games for the Oilers; the centre, who had Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle as linemates a year ago, is now on a line with a pair of big bodies in Benoit Pouliot and Zack Kassian.
