Mail Fail: Protect your personal info

Condo-security expert Frank Fourchalk shares his tips weekly:

Mail theft is a huge problem in condominiums. Year after year, we hear of such incidents across the country.

So, what can you do to cut back the possibility of being targeted by crooks?

Firstly, and most importantly, remember to take note of your condominium’s vulnerable mail area, which is often ignored. Report any suspicious activity, but don’t try to apprehend the suspect. (You are more beneficial as a witness than a police officer.)

If you’re going on vacation, ask your neighbour to pick up your mail.

Don’t leave discarded mail out in the open.

Always, shred anything with your name, address or other identifying information on it before discarding.

Finally, consider electronic banking and direct deposits to minimize the amount of financial data left in your mailbox.
