The evils of sugar are widely preached in nutritional circles, but never before have I seen it used as a weapon against rivals in a season of The Bachelor.
The women of The Bachelor Canada claimed on Wednesday — possibly tongue in cheek — that Brittany M was lacing the food she cooked for them with sugar to make them “fat” and less attractive to Chris Leroux, while avoiding said food herself.
But I would suggest it’s a different word that starts with “s” that makes Brittany a notable rival: sex as in sex appeal.
The curvaceous and pouty-lipped pageant queen managed to land a rose Wednesday after laying said lips on Chris with as much determination as she rode a mechanical bull on a group date, which is to say she hung on for dear life.
Chris said he was giving her the rose because she opened up to him. If by that he means she opened her mouth the better to smooch him with, then yeah, makes total sense. If he means she opened up emotionally, not so much. But I guess he can’t exactly say, “I’m giving this rose to the person I’m lusting after the most tonight.”
Often overcoming a fear is a ticket to getting the date rose, but it wasn’t Meghan’s night. Mikaela snagged it by telling Chris she’d been bullied as an overweight kid, details of which she said she hadn’t even shared with her family. And then she and Chris kissed.
Stacy also got a kiss, her first with Chris. And Meghan — who was feeling insecure about her attractions relative to the other women — probably could have got a kiss had her one-on-one time not been interrupted by Catie. Chris said in his confessional that he feels like Meghan is a good person and he wants good people in his life, so chin up, Meghan.
Group Date No. 2: Against the background of “Sugargate,” Brittany M and her chief accusers, Jessie and April, went on a date at the Hacienda El Viejo Wetlands along with Lisa, Brittany W, Lara, Dee and Lyndsey. Chris was looking to let loose and get immersed in the Costa Rican culture, which in this case meant dancing around with people wearing giant papier-mâché heads and “bull-riding.”
And because Chris is big on “competition,” the women were competing to win extra time with him.
Brittany went into the ring loaded for bear and bull. Stung by the accusations about her cooking, she declared, “I’m ready to kill today.” Luckily, things didn’t get that drastic, but she did manage to hang on to the mechanical bull the longest, followed by Brittany W, Dee and Lyndsey — a blow to sporty Jessie, who wanted to show Chris she was a “badass.”
That evening, Chris was impressed by Brittany M’s “supercompetitive” nature, but he also said she seemed to be putting her guard up and trying to be perfect all the time.
“Relationships are very sacred for me,” explained Brittany. “I don’t like putting my heart out on the line unless I’m serious about somebody. And as I’m getting to know you and I’m starting to feel a connection I’m starting to feel that it’s safe to let my guards down.”
And then she whispered, “I like to get what I want.”
Chris ate it up along with the extended and intense kissing that followed.
“There’s definitely more to Brittany than I anticipated,” grinned Chris. “There’s a lot of passion in our future. I can see that. She, uh, whoo.”
Luckily Dee came along with a talk that was the equivalent of a cold shower. What were Chris’s goals in life, she wanted to know, and was he ready for a long-term commitment? As a single mom, she made it clear she had no time to waste.
Chris told Dee that her having a kid wasn’t a big deal, but “we have to work this out (between us) before we can even start on the fact that you have a child.” Dee took that as encouragement, although their chat ended without a lip-lock when Lyndsey interrupted.
But despite sharing smooches and an “emotional connection” with Lyndsey, Chris gave the rose to Brittany M, whom Lyndsey declared “sneaky.”
“I definitely think the girls are underestimating me and it’s a mistake. I will win this. I always get what I want,” said Brittany.
Spoken like a true villain.
One-on-One Date With Kait: Surfing was on the menu at Playa Grande, but it was deeper waters that “luxury travel nomad” Kait and Chris were looking to navigate.
Rule No. 1 of one-on-ones is that some painful and/or humiliating part of one’s past must be surrendered up to merit getting a rose, so Kait tearfully revealed that she had experienced a devastating breakup with someone who wasn’t who she thought he was, thus leading her to fear that Chris wasn’t who he claimed to be.
Presumably there was plenty more conversation that we didn’t see since Kait concluded that she could picture a lifetime connection with Chris and Chris claimed he could picture falling in love with Kait. “I feel very seen by him,” Kait said.
She was also kissed by him, lots.
The Rose Ceremony: Brittany M kept her claws sheathed at the cocktail party. It was Mikaela who pulled a villain move. Despite already having a rose she stole Chris for alone time, royally pissing off the roseless women frantic for an extra few minutes with him.
On the one hand, it was pretty rude. On the other, she interrupted Lisa talking about squirrels so she might have been doing Chris a favour.
Mikaela got teary when she felt the other “women’s eyes burning holes in my soul” and tried to blame her history of being bullied for her behaviour, saying she was ready to stop looking for other people’s approval. I call BS on that. There’s a difference between not wanting to be a “people pleaser” and being greedy.
Anyway, with three roses already secured, Chris had eight more to hand out.
The first one went to Jessie (who told Chris she’d been kicked out of her parents’ house when she was 14 and learned to shut off her emotions but was now ready to be “vulnerable”).
Catie, Lara, Stacy, Meghan, Dee, Lyndsey and Lisa also got flowers. April and Brittany W went home.
Chris and his lucky 11 are staying in Costa Rica and the Brittany M follies will continue.
