Artistic director Jeanne Lamon announced Monday that it is launching a $ 3-million fundraising campaign to improve the seating comfort on the main floor, build a permanent stage and fix the acoustics.
“The hall we perform in is like the instrument for the entire orchestra and choir, and if we improve that instrument, we dramatically improve the experience for our audience and our musicians,” she said in a news release.
Construction will be in two phases: the first, including acoustical improvements, repair and replacement of flooring, new seating, the permanent stage and increased wheelchair accessibility, is expected to take place between June and September; phase 2, which will improve the lobby and other areas, is expected in 2014 and 2015.
“With the assistance of internationally acclaimed acoustician Bob Essert, the ERA Architects team who specialize in heritage buildings and theatre consultant Anne Minors, this will be an outstanding and affordable 750-seat downtown venue with a warm and intimate space to share music,” said Tricia Baldwin, general manager of Tafelmusik.
“We’ve played in the best halls in the world, yet our large and loyal audience hears us in a substandard acoustic with uncomfortable seats,” said Baldwin, when asked the renovation was going ahead now.
