TheTake lets you buy products seen in movies

, Last Updated: 1:23 PM ET

TheTake is a new app that will help you identify and buy potentially any item seen in a movie scene.

Just launch the app and using a smartphone or tablet’s microphone, TheTake should be able to identify both the film and the exact scene simply from the soundtrack.

If it gets it right, information about all of the different items in the shot — from the costumes and accessories worn by the actors to the furniture in the background should appear. It can even tell you the real-world geographical location of the scene itself.

The company behind the app, also called TheTake, has formed partnerships with businesses that sell the products so that users can get a direct link for purchasing and, knowing that not everyone can afford designer outfits, also offers items in a similar but more affordable style.

At the moment, the app is only capable of identifying scenes in films released in 2014 but can pick out everything from ornaments to hotels as well as champagne brands and sunglasses. However more films will be added to the database on a weekly basis.

Considering the relationship that movie theater chains have with smartphone use, it’s probably best to test the app at home with a Blu-ray player or via Netflix.

TheTake is available to download now for the iPhone and iPad.
