Thousands join march for gun control on National Mall in Washington
WASHINGTON—Thousands of people have gathered in front of the Capitol for a march to support gun control.
Marchers were led by Washington Mayor Vincent Gary and other officials Saturday morning, and the crowd stretched for about two blocks along Constitution Avenue.
Participants held signs reading “Ban Assault Weapons Now” and “Gun Control Now.” Other signs carried names of victims of gun violence.
About 100 residents of Newtown, Connecticut, were expected at the march. It was organized in response to the December elementary school shooting there that killed 20 children and six teachers.
Kara Baekey of Norwalk, Connecticut, said she immediately thought of her two young children when she heard about the shooting. Baekey said she decided she must take action, and that’s why she joined Saturday’s march.
