Toronto Mayor John Tory is assuring Amazon that Toronto can deliver.
The company announced Thursday that it intends to open Amazon HQ2, a second headquarters somewhere in North America where it plans to invest more than $ 5 billion and add up to 50,000 high paying jobs.
City staff will work with Toronto Global on an attractive bid to host the new Amazon headquarters, Tory said in a statement Thursday.
“I firmly believe that Toronto is a prime candidate to host Amazon’s second headquarters in North America,” Tory said. “We are a bold, innovative city that has plenty of homegrown tech talent. We also continue to attract talent and companies from around the world.
“I will be leading the charge to make the case that Amazon should call Toronto home.”
Amazon says it’s looking to set up shop in a stable and business-friendly metropolitan area of more than 1 million people which can attract skilled tech staff.
“We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said. “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”
