Facing a slew of misdemeanour charges stemming from a heated Christmastime encounter with Miami Beach police after a night of barhopping, Toronto sisters Angelina and Michele Mastrangelo are scheduled to appear in a Miami-Dade County court Thursday.
The sisters plan to contest the charges that landed them in jail overnight — and prompted them to file a complaint against the Miami Beach Police Department over the insults, humiliation and bruises they say they suffered.
After they missed their arraignment hearing last month, a bench warrant was issued for their arrest, and they feared they’d be nabbed by U.S. authorities and tossed in jail until their court date. But they slid quickly through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoint at Pearson International Airport, and weren’t stopped by authorities in Miami.
“I didn’t want to get thrown back in jail again,” said Michele, 20, while smoking a cigarette outside the terminal building, the pink knitted toque she wore on the plane tucked away in her luggage, not needed in a warm Miami breeze. “I feel pretty great.”
Michele and Angelina, 24, who own a day spa in Toronto’s east end, said they plan to spend the next few days tanning, shopping and celebrating their mom’s birthday, making this visit much different than their last.
“We’re not going to be going out to drink. We’re not going to be going out a lot, and we’re going to be more worried,” said Michele, adding that she is “a bit nervous for court.” Both sisters are charged with resisting arrest without violence. Michele is also charged with disorderly intoxication and criminal mischief.
