U.S. President Barack Obama sworn in for second term

WASHINGTON—With a rapid-fire swearing-in ceremony that lasted barely 30 seconds, U.S. President Barack Obama’s second term is officially underway.

The low-key White House ceremony at noon Sunday satisfied a constitutional requirement that presidents take the oath on Jan. 20 and ended with Obama turning to daughter Sasha and saying, “I did it.”

As that date falls on a Sunday, the full pomp and circumstance of Obama’s second inauguration will happen again Monday in a purely decorative outdoor ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, where security teams anticipate upwards of 800,000 people.

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Obama said, repeating after Chief Justice John Roberts, head of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Roberts, who stumbled as he led Obama through the oath four years ago, prompting an emergency do-over later at the White House, took no chances this time, reading the words from a cue card.

Minutes later the First Lady shared the moment on Twitter, writing, “Barack just took the official oath at the @WhiteHouse & used my grandma’s bible for the ceremony. I’m so proud of him.”

The understated ceremony in the White House Blue Room was wildly anticlimactic, given the carefully choreographed pageantry that begins at 11:30 a.m. EST Monday.
